While pointing out this is an important finding about a relatively rare form of cancer, a 2007 post in Web MD reported :
HPV, the virus that causes cervical cancer, is also linked to throat cancer, and oral sex is a major risk factor for both men and women, new research shows. Having multiple oral sex partners topped the list of practices associated with an increased risk of developing oropharyngeal cancer, according to the study published in the May 10 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.and last year ABC News reported:
People in the study who reported having a history of six or more oral sex partners were three times as likely to develop the cancer as people who reported that they had never had oral sex.
In looking at patients with tumors that were positive for a particular strain of HPV already well-linked to cervical cancer, six or more oral sex partners increased risk for throat cancer by eightfold.
And those who showed evidence of a prior oral infection with human papilloma virus (HPV) were 32 times more likely to develop the cancer.

HPV appears to be linked to a rare but treatable form of throat cancer in men that's on an uptick. If the trend continues, the annual occurrence of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer among men will surpass that of cervical cancer among women by the year 2020, according to a study that will be presented this week at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's annual scientific meeting.In the above article, the story talked about a couple in which the man was diagnosed with HPV-related stage 4 throat cancer and had then decided to have their sons ans well as their daughters vaccinated against HPV. Yup, that vaccine will protect boys and girls.

If you think the HPVvaccine is going to give your kids permission to have sex, as some seem to believe (argh!), would you prefer that not having it resulted in cancer?
At least, although this news report is from last year, the abundance of recent articles (see below signature) shows the issue is not being swept under the rug.

I got a lot of vaccines as late as the nineteen-nineties when I wanted to go back to college. Due to several outbreaks of "childhood" diseases at the state universities here all students were required to have or have had vaccinations. I got them all over again. In the sixties we were vaccinated against everything possible. Yay! Polio gone, smallpox all but eradicated. We did not have a choice. Today, most people do have a choice about this vaccine. I hope the right choice is made for everyone's sake.
