Spooky Indeed!

Katie MacAllistair put a video of these guys on Facebook the other day. I had to find out more about them. They are a group of men from Australia in a choir which combines singing and rhythmic skills with a sense of humor based in the incongruity of a bunch of Guys from Oz singing pop songs in unique arrangements. Even though there's a gimmick to it I just can't help admiring their skill and enjoying these videos. They have a well designed website with cool rollovers:

The Spookies were formed by Melbourne-based Taberner in Sydney in 2001, inspired by the great Georgian choirs. A festival organiser’s dream., they will be busy wowing UK festival audiences at Cambridge, Warwick, Towersey, Wickham and Sidmouth Folk Week with numerous interwoven one night gigs the length and breadth of the country.

A highlight of their 2009 tour was at Shrewsbury Folk Festival when they joined forces with award-winning English roots act Show of Hands for “a folk song from Yorkshire" (Human League’s Don’t You Want Me (!) -an unlikely pairing that brought the house down whilst in a Sidmouth pub they tangled vocal chords with hot property Cornish shanty choir Fisherman’s Friends.

With a sound variously described as “sexy, powerful., impossibly gentle and sad but unmistakably male”  and “ as warm as toast and as grainy as teak” , their repertoire ranges from Georgian drinking songs to whisper perfect ballads and a string of improbable original hits like Don’t Stand Between a Man and his Tool and Stop Scratching It… They also offer hilarious, elephantine retreatments of classics like Earth, Wind & Fire’s >Boogie Wonderland and the funniest version of Abba’s Dancing Queen you are likely to witness.

This is the most sense Dancing Queen has ever made to me!
