That title takes me back, remember DEVO? Today I'm not telling you about the band known for their electro-new wave pop form the 1970s and 1980s. I'm looking at WHIP IT!, a low-key film by Drew Barrymore.
What a cast! Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis, Jimmy Fallon, Eve, Zoe Bell, Daniel Stern, Alia Shawkat, Ari Graynor, Sarah Habel, Andrew Wilson, and Carlo Alban. For such a cast there seemed to be very little in the way of puffed ego.
It was a very enjoyable ensemble film. Page is always a quiet and introspective performer. The ending is sappy but fits. Barrymore may have found her stride more as a director than a actor. This is a laudable effort. I love that Bliss doesn't become the pushover. The guy messes with her and she tells him to stuff it! My husband really enjoyed it as well so it is good for both genders. Part of the cast list are experienced actors, some a likely Drew Barrymore's address book and part off the Saturday Night Live cast list. Daniel Stern, the father, played one of the robbers in HOME ALONE! Oh my gosh, at first I though he was Randy Quaid. He is so much older looking.
This is a feel good, coming of age film with uneven timing and acting but it all seems to work. There are two people coming of age: the daughter, Bliss is coming into her own and becoming SO not the daughter her mother wants. And the mother, Brooke, Marcia Gay Harden has to give up vicariously winning pageants through her daughter who is just so not a beauty pageant person.
